FAQ
The questions parents of children already in Grades 1 to 4 ask most often.
The school day
What must my child bring to school every day?
Three things, without fail: the school calendar, the school identity card and the school diary. Every student must have their own copy of the calendar and bring it daily.
For the long recess, only dry food. Students are asked not to bring books, magazines, newspapers or periodicals that are not needed for the day’s lessons.
What are the uniform rules?
All students come to school in the prescribed uniform and are expected to be neat and tidy. What the uniform consists of is set out on the rules and uniform page.
Children are asked not to wear ornaments or a watch. That is a safety rule rather than a dress rule — students are responsible for the safe custody of their own books and belongings.
How is the campus kept safe?
The entire campus — classrooms, corridors, entrances and common areas — is monitored by CCTV, and movement between rooms is supervised. Safety is the reason the school also asks visitors to come in only with the Head Teacher’s consent.
Lessons and progress
What is my child taught?
English, Marathi, Mathematics, EVS — which takes in Science, History, Geography and Civics — ICT, Art, Work Experience, Physical Education and Value Education. The curriculum is the Maharashtra State Board’s, aligned with NEP 2020, in English medium.
How are lessons taught?
Through child-centred, activity-based and competency-driven methods, so a lesson is understood rather than memorised. Every classroom has an interactive smart panel, and multimedia lessons are used alongside the board and the exercise book.
There is continuous formative assessment with constructive feedback, and individual attention and remedial support wherever a child needs it.
How much homework should I expect?
Enough that it needs doing daily. Parents are earnestly asked to see that their children do their homework and prepare their lessons each day as per the timetable — the school is explicit that this matters both for the child and for the smooth running of the class.
What can my child take part in outside lessons?
Twelve competitions run through the year — recitation, fancy dress, elocution, drawing and painting, story telling, group singing, handwriting, work experience, clay work, rangoli, best out of waste, and sports and games.
Alongside those are literary and language activities, art, craft, music and dance, sport, cultural celebrations, environmental work and leadership opportunities. The Student Life pages set all of it out.
Who teaches my child?
The section has twenty-two teachers under two head teachers, qualified in B.A., B.Com., M.A., B.Ed. and D.Ed., with an art teacher among them. Many have taught here for more than twenty years. Every name, and who leads each teaching team, is on the teachers page.
Talking to the school
How do I meet my child’s teacher?
Ask the office to arrange it. Parents, guardians and others are not permitted to see their ward or meet a teacher during school hours without the prior consent of the Head Teacher — it is how the school knows who is on the campus while the children are in it.
How do I tell the school we have moved or changed our number?
Tell the office promptly. The school keeps a record of the address and telephone number of every student’s parents or guardians, and it is only useful if it is current.
When can I get a bonafide certificate?
From the school office between 1.00 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. only. The same window covers date of birth, first attempt and leaving certificates. No school business is transacted on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.
May we give a gift to a teacher, or collect funds at school?
No. Presents in cash or in kind to teachers are not permitted, and collecting funds for any reason within the school premises is prohibited.
Is there financial help?
SIWS administers 151 scholarship and endowment funds, given by well-wishers over more than nine decades and awarded from the Kindergarten Section through to the S.S.C. Examination. Three of them name the Wadala Primary Section specifically, and the whole register is linked below.
